Celebrated career criminal Street Artist Banksy has begun a month-long residency in New York City as part of an exhibition his website is calling Better Out Than In, ”an entire show on the streets of New York.”
“According to The Village Voice, the artist has already started his NYC residency – the first work has been located at 18 Allen Street, near Canal Street, on the border of the Lower East Side and Chinatown. The artwork (pictured below) is accompanied by a loopy audio guide, accessed by calling the 800 number beside the stencil.”

UPDATE 10/8/2013
[This morning I read in the Daily News that all of Banksy’s NYC works have been defaced by other graffiti artists who are jealous of Bansky’s fame, which they think is undeserved.] In my opinion Banksy has the combination of social commentary and wit, which makes him memorable. No one quotes or remembers other taggers.]
Last night on TV, Stephen Colbert did a humorous bit on Banksy. He said that if Banksy does graffiti on the side of your building, your property value goes up $1.3 million.

“Here’s a look at Banksy’s latest work, which appeared on the lower east side’s Ludlow Str. Instead of his usual slightly amusing tone, this work seems to be a commentary on the Iraq War, WikiLeaks and government spying.
A barrel to the left of the spray painted car reveals a 1-800 number which links to audio from a classified 39-minute video of the deadly July 2007 Baghdad airstrikes. It was originally leaked by WikiLeaks in 2010.
“Think I just ran over a guy,” one soldier can be heard saying in the audio, followed by laughter, is just one of many macabre comments.” …from Artnet
